If you’re like most people, you probably haven’t spent a lot of time in your car over the past year or so. And while not having to deal with a daily commute is certainly nice – as well as all the money saved on gas – your car can’t totally be neglected.
In fact, it still requires service no matter how little driving you may be doing right now. Oil changes in particular are very important.
What If My Car Is Just Sitting There?
It doesn’t matter. Lack of use is good in some areas for a car – like avoiding wear and tear on the tires or brake system – but it doesn’t really apply in others. Old oil eventually goes bad, whether it's flowing through the engine every day or just sitting in the engine.
When oil just sits, it will start to degrade over time. Not to mention, it also decreases in viscosity, which is the slippery consistency. This results in oil that's harder to circulate throughout the engine.
Then, when you go to use your car, it will almost certainly lead to poor engine performance. It may also result in an expensive repair or replacement.
When Should the Oil Be Changed?
When you’re not doing a lot of driving, a good rule of thumb to follow for changing the oil in your Honda is twice per year, or every six months. This will help make sure that when you do start driving more, your car will be able to perform as it should.
