It’s tough to beat the efficiency of the innovative Honda Clarity. The sleek midsize sedan made waves as the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle available to retail customers. As a Honda Clarity dealer, we’re taking a look back at its rich history at Heritage Honda Bel Air.

Introduction of the Honda FCX Clarity

A version of the Honda Clarity, known as the Honda FCX Clarity, was first introduced in 2008. It was the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle available, which provided unmatched efficiency. The sedan used a 100 kW Honda Vertical Flow (V Flow) hydrogen fuel stack, which allowed electricity to be supplied on demand.

The sedan boasted a 240-mile range and an impressive five-minute refueling time. In all, it generated up to 134 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque. In 2014, it was announced that the vehicle was being phased out.

What’s a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle?

Similar to an electric vehicle, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is powered by electricity. However, instead of getting energy solely from a battery, it’s powered by the chemical energy of hydrogen. It also captures energy through regenerative braking, which is stored in the battery and helps power the vehicle.

The Release of the Honda Clarity Line-Up

The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell concept was first announced in 2014. The 2021 model delivers a notable 174 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. It also has an impressive 360-mile range.

In 2017, the Honda Clarity Electric and the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid joined the line-up. Production for all three models ended in 2021.
